INTRODUCTION

Headquarters USAF frequently turned to their aerial reconnaissance units when they laid on cutting-edge missions or experimented with new equipment or techniques. An excellent example of this is demonstrated by the Jack Romney crew story of their being drafted on short notice to man KB-29 missions refueling F-84 fighter aircraft under Korean War combat conditions in the summer of 1951.

This story, published below, is yet another demonstration of this history of experimentation and progress through the cooperation and efforts of USAF aerial reconnaissance units.

A Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, 91st Air Refueling Squadron KB-29P air refueling an RB-45C, Fall of 1951. The pilot of the RB-45C is Harold Austin. You may read his story of his crew’s RB-47 penetration of the Soviet Union in May, 1954,
